Description
Barolo Fontanin 2016 Livia Fontana
Variety: Nebbiolo 100%
Ruby red color.
The nose defines the class and the level of quality, which is very high. It has intense aromas of fresh fruit, with black cherry and plum. Notes of juniper and aromatic herbs anticipate those of tobacco and undergrowth. Chestnuts, mushrooms and musk are added to the cinchona. Impressive, for its elegance, cleanliness and the number of scents.
On the palate it is animated by conspicuous tannins, however gentle and composed, with excellent minerality and freshness. The volume expressed by the softness compensates for the hardness in a perfect way, so as to be harmonious and balanced.
Aromas of Rhubarb, aromatic herbs and fruit return from the palate.
Excellent Traditional Barolo, that is produced with grapes from different vineyards, and excellent hand of the young Michele Fontana, which will be discussed at length in the future.
Livia Fontana’s company has existed since 1850, but now it is admirably conducted by her and her two children. Lorenzo helps him in commercial terms, while Michele is the author, who rules the field and the cellar.
Barolo Fontanin 2016 Livia Fontana
Barolo Fontanin is produced with the traditional method, that is, by combining the grapes of several vineyards. Most of them come from the Mariondino cru, while the rest comes from the Serra vineyard, both administratively located in the municipality of Castiglione Falletto. Mariondino is a small vineyard adjacent to Cascina Fantana: the last vineyard before changing town, becoming Bussia and consequently Monforte d’Alba. While Serra is still in Castiglione Falletto, and is the westernmost part of the famous cru Villero.
Mariondino has solar exposure to the West, and has an espalier training system with guyot pruning.
Soil: it is composed of sandstone marls with a notable presence of sand.
